Chapter 6

Derek opens his tablet and calls headquarters. They put him through to the chief who says, “Derek, I have good news and bad news.” Derek takes a deep breath, “ok what is the bad news?” The chief pauses and then says, we looked deeper into that trip that Mila took five years ago. It turns out her friend is now involved in some deep underground movement which we have been watching for years. They have their own leaders, manifesto, and a vision to create a completely free society which basically shits on the ideals of the monarchy which both Belgium and England are.” Derek takes another deep breath and says, “and when did her friend get involved with this group?” The chief says, “seven years ago.” Derek swallows now questioning his own judgment of Mila. The chief continues, “the organization has claimed responsibility for assassinations of dictators and her friend, from what we can tell is deeply involved.”

Derek’s mind races, trying to piece the puzzle together. He asks the chief, “where do they get their financial backing?” The chief responds, “that part isn’t clear. As I said, we have been tracking them for years their transactions are basically untraceable.” Derek says, “so as far we know, they don’t have funding or at least substantial benefactors.” The chief says, “that’s why we think they recruited Mila and her progressive political stance does also support this theory.” Derek thinks back to the experience he just had which doesn’t add up to what he is hearing now. Derek still isn’t convinced she is a radical anarchist trying to bring about a new world order.

Derek presses the chief now, “I thought she hasn’t been in contact with that friend since their trip.” Derek wonders what the link between her trip and the messages she started receiving just after from someone claiming he met her in LA is. The chief says, “well that’s the good news. We’ve traced a string of calls to her phone from burner phones which all come from the same county that her friend is said to be living in Illinois.” Derek thinks, “but what if she didn’t want to be a part of the group and she turned him down when he tried? Were the calls both ways?” The chief replies, “the calls were both ways Derek. So the real good news is that you get to come home and we can just cancel the Queen’s event since we know when the plan was supposed to be carried out.” Derek pauses for a moment, choosing his words carefully, knowing that if he says the wrong thing, he could lose his job, the only career he ever wanted, the only thing he knows how to do. And if he says too much, he might mess up something he has just started which feels like something he hasn’t felt, ever.

Derek says, “chief, I can’t do that. I have evidence that your theory may not be correct. If I reveal too much,
